Airtel to be title sponsor of Champions League T20

Airtel has signed up as the Title Sponsor of Champions League Twenty20 for a period of 5 years starting with the inaugural season in 2009. Airtel signed the deal today with ESPN STAR Sports, the commercial partners of Champions League T20. The first edition of the Champions League will be played in India starting October 08, 2009. A total 12 teams from 7 test playing nations will participate in the inaugural edition. The 16 day league will have 23 Twenty20 matches.

Already embroiled in a bitter dispute with the West Indies Cricket Board, the West Indies Players Association (WIPA) is now exchanging words with the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) over retainer contracts for 33 players ahead of the Champions League Twenty20 series in India October 8 to 23.

WIPA president/chief executive, Dinanath Ramnarine, has accused the TTCB of misleading the public on the issue after a meeting between the two parties in Port-of-Spain on Tuesday.

ESPN, Airtel in Rs120 cr deal for five years

India’s largest mobile phone services provider, Bharti Airtel Ltd, has signed on as the title sponsor of the Champions League Twenty20 cricket event for a sum of Rs120 crore for five years with broadcaster ESPN Software India Pvt. Ltd, a senior executive from a media buying company said. The executive did not want to be named because he is involved in negotiations with advertisers.

ESPN and Airtel confirmed the partnership, but did not comment on the value of the deal. The Champions League is the world championship for domestic Twenty20 club champions. The tournament is scheduled to take place 8-23 October.

IPL champions to face English county in Twenty20 Champions League

Indian Premier League champions the Deccan Chargers were drawn against an English county this morning for the first Champions League Twenty20 event. Two English counties were included in the draw and their identities will be known after the Twenty20 Cup finals day on Aug 15.
The competition, which was scrapped last year due to the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, will feature 23 matches spread over 16 days in India between Oct 8-23.

Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad to host Twenty20 Champions League

Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad will host the first Twenty20 Champions League to be played Oct 8-23.

The venues are home to the three Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises -- Delhi Daredevils, Bangalore Royal Challengers and Deccan Chargers -- who have qualified for the 12-team tournament that will have 23 matches.

Teams: Victorian Bushrangers (Australia), New South Wales Blues (Australia), Deccan Chargers (India), Royal Bangalore Challengers (India), Delhi Daredevils (India),

Cape Cobras (South Africa), Diamond Eagles (South Africa), Otago Volts (New Zealand),

Trinidad & Tobago (West Indies) and Wayamba (Sri Lanka).

Gayle signs with Western Australia

Western Australia have secured Chris Gayle for the Twenty20 Big Bash next summer, following Victoria's signing of his West Indies team-mate Dwayne Bravo last week. Gayle will join the Warriors for the Twenty20 tournament, which falls between West Indies' Test and one-day series in Australia, in the new-year period.
