ECB and BCCI move closer on Champions League

England's decision to send its team back to India barely two weeks after the terror attacks in Mumbai has led to a significant thaw in ties between the two national boards. Talks are still at a delicate stage but the BCCI, it is learnt, is now more open to accommodating the ECB in its Champions Twenty20 League blueprint, possibly in the way of one more team, a voice in its management and a host status in the future. The two boards are also known to be formalising a five-Test 'icon' status series, on the lines of the Ashes.

Middlesex pin twenty20 cricket hopes on wildcard entry

Middlesex will consider lobbying Champions League Twenty20 organisers for a wildcard for the 2009 tournament, writes Jon Batham. Seaxes chief executive Vinny Codrington and his team were devastated when organisers decided there wasn't a sufficient window of opportunity to restage the 2008 tournament, originally postponed following the terrorist attacks in Mumbai earlier this month.

Even before all the plans fell into place, there were disagreements between the three founder members of the tournament — the cricket boards of Australia, England and India — first over revenue sharing agreement for the tournament, and then over the appearance of players who had allegiances with the rebel Indian Cricket League.

Western Australia and Victoria believe they have missed out on a minimum of A$600,000 and will ask Cricket Australia for compensation after being told they must requalify for the postponed Champions League Twenty20. Tournament officials decided on Friday to stage the event, which was cancelled due to the Mumbai terrorist attacks, in India next October.
